Reviving Public Service Recognition Week

Reviving Public Service Recognition Week icon

Every year during the first full week of May, the U.S. Government and Partnership for Public Service celebrate Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) to recognize the tireless service of our federal, state, and local government employees. This year PSRW will take place May 2-8, 2021.

In the not-so-distant past, PSRW was a major event, with federal agencies and others set up on the National Mall to enlighten visitors about their services and missions. From impressive military vehicles on display from the Department of Defense to brochures and coffee mugs from the United States Department of Agriculture, it was an inspiring experience from which attendees took away an increased awareness.

But over the years, the fanfare has faded away. Was it a backlash against government spending? The DC pollen count in May? Likely the former, though the latter is indeed formidable. Whatever the case, it is refreshing to see that the new administration is bringing attention back to PSRW (#govpossible), putting faces to the government agencies that provide services to the public every day.

Because both of my parents have worked for the federal government for several decades, this event, which celebrates the dedication of public service workers, is important to me. During his career, my father detected, prevented, and prosecuted the fraud, waste, and abuse of government funds. Even today, my mother helps facilitate scholarly research and curriculum project grant funding that enriches the public’s understanding of our country’s past and present circumstances. The dichotomy between their missions shows just how much the government does every day to serve and protect citizens.

This year, as we recognize PSRW, let’s take a moment to look around and tell the government employees that we know that their hard work is recognized and appreciated. And if you are reading this as a current or former public service worker, then thank you.
