BIG NTI 2023: A Capital Event

BIG NTI 2023: A Capital Event icon

Management Concepts was proud to be a gold sponsor of the 2023 Blacks in Government (BIG) National Training Institute (NTI), which took place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Oxon Hill, Maryland, just outside of our nation’s capital. From August 28 to 31, 1,800 attendees convened from across the country to learn, network, and explore the vast exhibit hall.

The 2023 theme, “Accept the Challenge, Exceed the Standard through Professional Development,” was ever-present over the four-day event, with packed session rooms covering a range of topics pertinent to federal, state, and local government personnel. Tracks included communications skills; diversity, equity, and inclusion; leadership and management skills; technical and professional skills; and much more. Agency Forums also supplied professionals within their respective government agencies the opportunity to receive updates, meet senior leadership, and form new connections.

Management Concepts was pleased to sponsor networking events and host sessions, presenting our annual workshops and sponsoring the BIG NOW Generation “Munch & Mingle” lunchtime event.

Our annual sessions offer credit opportunities, featuring modules from our Professional Government Supervisor Program, which features over 30 topics aligned to the Office of Personnel Management’s Supervisory Training Framework and Senior Executive Service Executive Core Qualifications. This year’s topics were “Working within the Federal Budget Process” and “Preparing Effective Writing.” These exclusive sessions required preregistration and were again at maximum capacity, with the instructor and course content receiving enthusiastic reviews from participants.

Another great success was the BIG NOW Generation “Munch & Mingle” lunchtime networking event, which drew nearly 100 young professionals and supporters to discuss career advancement while having fun and making connections. Speakers included Alesia Smith, BIG NOW Generation coordinator; Steve Maier, president of Management Concepts; and Ms. Shirley Jones, president of BIG.

At the President’s Reception on the evening of August 29, BIG national president Shirley Jones thanked corporate sponsors for their support and presented an award to Management Concepts during a photo opportunity. Though Management Concepts was not able to announce the winner of the BIG–Management Concepts Certificate Program Scholarship during the live program, this competitively awarded opportunity—a $10,000 value—enables the winner to take courses to earn a Management Concepts Certificate. This year the Scholarship went to Ms. Penny Popps of the US Small Business Administration, pursuing the Federal Financial Management Certificate.

Throughout the event, Management Concepts staff spoke with BIG members visiting our booth in the exhibit hall, guiding them through the process for individual professional development opportunities as well as learning and consulting services for organizational change.
